eCosCentric introduces eCosPro 4.0

eCosPro v4.0

NUREMBERG, GERMANY -- February 24, 2016 -- eCosCentric Limited, the eCos® experts, today announced a major release of the eCosPro® real-time operating system. The new 4.0 release of the eCosPro Developer's Kit delivers improvements to the development tools, marks a change to 64-bit native host tools, includes the latest Mars version of the Eclipse IDE, consolidates run-time enhancements and delivers full-featured evaluation copies of key eCosCentric middleware.

The emphasis for the 4.0 release has been on improvements to the native host tools to ease the developer's workflow. All host tools are now native 64-bit applications, eliminating dependencies on 32-bit compatibility packages and keeping pace with the rapidly changing mainstream Linux distributions. Under the hood, attribute and comment properties have been added to libcdl. These enhancements make package and target identification much easier from both the ecosconfig command and the graphical ConfigTool, also helping to improve navigation between similar packages. eCosCentric's Eclipse plugins utilise these libcdl changes to enable Profile association with eCosPro configurations.

The ConfigTool includes a swathe of usability improvements such as creation, editing & selection of Profiles by a user, a built-in method to check & apply eCosPro updates, support for copying values to the clipboard, enhanced filtering of displayed packages, addition of scroll wheel functionality and has been refreshed to use wxWidgets v2.12. Improvements to ecosconfig include a new output format and behaviour which provide for better scripting. A compatibility feature has been added to deliver superior integration with ConfigTool and Eclipse. Additional commands have been added to ecosconfig to list attributes associated with active packages, allowing developers to determine which license is applicable to each package.

eCosCentric continues to expand the range of targets in the eCosPro sourcebase and enhance the run-time features. Examples in the new 4.0 release include a scheduler option to avoid potential thread starvation scenarios and optimisations to save memory on highly constrained systems by combining interrupt and startup stacks. Support for the hardware floating point units on ARM® Cortex®-M and Cortex®-A processors have been added, along with SMP for Cortex®-A9 MPCore®. Selected targets benefit from eCosPro-BootUp, providing a lightweight bootROM and extensible framework which can incorporate secure boot, application and system update features for IoT, M2M and traditional embedded deployments.

The eCosPro Developer's Kit has always delivered an outstanding out-of-the-box experience. For debugging the new 4.0 release provides pre-built OpenOCD executables and adds multi-threaded debug support for advanced users with Ronetix PEEDI JTAG emulators. Full-featured evaluation versions of key eCosCentric middleware packages are included in v4.0 releases. These include USB host and peripheral stacks, and related USB classes; CAN device drivers; mDNS Zeroconf/Bonjour networking; MMFS and Yaffs file systems, depending on target support.
